His personal name was Hasan, while his titles included Mu‘in al-Din, Mu‘in al-Awliya, Khalifat al-Rasul fi al-Hind, Hind al-Wali, Shahanshah-e-Mashaikh, Sultan al-‘Arifin, Burhan al-‘Ashiqin, Shaykh al-Islam, Gharib Nawaz, Sultan al-Hind, Na’ib Rasul fi al-Hind, and Sadr-e-Bazm-e-Chishtiyan.
He was both حسنی and حسینی, and his noble lineage reaches Amir al-Mu’minin حضرت علی المرتضیؓ in the thirteenth generation.
He was born in the region of Sijistan in 537 AH / 1139 CE. For this reason, some biographers referred to him as “Sijzi,” and he became widely known as Hasan Sijzi.
For the first eleven years of his life, he was raised in great comfort and prosperity. After the passing of his respected father, his inheritance included a garden and other property, through which he lived peacefully and comfortably.
One day, while seated in his garden, a majdhub known as Sayyiduna Ibrahim Qalandarؒ entered. Khwaja Sahibؒ offered him grapes, which he ate. Afterwards, Ibrahim Qalandarؒ took a small portion of کھِلی from beneath his arm, first placed it in his own mouth and chewed it, then removed it and placed it into the mouth of Khwaja Sahibؒ.
At that very moment, the Divine انوارِ الٰہی manifested upon him. His heart became detached from the world, and he sold his garden and possessions, distributing all the wealth among the poor and needy.
Later, in a town near Nishapur, he was blessed with the meeting and companionship of Khwaja Uthman Harwaniؒ. The moment he entered the presence of his Shaykh, a single glance from the Murshid illuminated everything from the Throne to beneath the earth. Khwaja Uthman Harwaniؒ immediately accepted him into بیعت.
For nearly two and a half years, Khwaja Mu‘in al-Dinؒ performed intense مجاہدہ and چلہ for the purification of the نفس. Thereafter, his Murshid-e-Kamilؒ bestowed upon him the blessed خرقہ of رسول اللہ ﷺ — the same خرقہ associated with the Mi‘raj — as the خرقۂ خلافت.
He spent approximately seventy years in شب بیداری, frequently observed fasting, and abundantly recited the Qur’an. He possessed a deep spiritual inclination toward سماع, often becoming so spiritually absorbed that he would lose awareness of his surroundings.
During his travels, he benefited spiritually from numerous Awliya, including Shaykh Shahab al-Din Suhrawardiؒ and حضرت عبد القادر جیلانیؒ.
On the night of his passing, several بزرگانِ دین saw in a dream that رسول اللہ ﷺ had come personally to welcome him.
Khwaja Mu‘in al-Din Hasan Chishti Ajmeri رحمۃ اللہ علیہ passed away on Saturday, 6th Rajab al-Murajjab 633 AH / 1235 CE, at approximately ninety-six years of age.
His blessed shrine is located in Ajmer Sharif.
